The scope of our hustle

We were recently invited to discuss our work with ShoutOut Michigan, and they asked us about risk-taking. It was cool, being asked to reflect on risk, because it’s something we talk a lot about. Starting a creative goods and services business carries inherent risks, obviously, and the fear of those risks was an obstacle in the months (OK, years) while we were hoping and planning to start working for ourselves.

One thing we counted on to offset those risks was the variety of skills we both developed over years of hustling between different jobs and interests. Painting, home restoration, illustration, graphic design, web design, writing, editing, retail management, food service, marketing and advertising, nonprofit development and management, staff development and training, and teaching have all been in our professional wheelhouse at one time or another. That hustle has certainly paid off in growing a business from scratch.

The scope of our recent work has been dizzying: a revamp of This is a bookstore / Bookbug’s website, an identity for Ice Cream Social Kalamazoo, restoration of a 1958 camper trailer, a mural for the forensic interview room of the Children’s Advocacy Center, grant writing and editing for individuals and organizations, facilitating a conversation about the value of creative practice for OnePlace’s Emerging Leader Academy, and a number of interior and exterior painting jobs at private residences.

The common thread in these projects (pictured below) is that we’re connecting with people with shared values who want their environment to be more vital and vibrant. If you want the same and have ideas for partnering, we’d love to hear from you.
